Apple did something interesting at its September iPhone launch event: it barely changed the “regular” iPhone 14 but made a lot of changes to the “Pro” iPhone 14. When they first came out, the two lines of devices looked and worked a lot alike, but now they are very different.
Different iPhone models that came out in the same year might be even more different in 2023. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says that Apple will call its biggest new phone the iPhone 15 Ultra instead of the usual iPhone 15 Pro Max. This will be similar to the name of the new Apple Watch Ultra.
Gurman didn’t say what new features the iPhone 15 line will have, but he did say that he thinks Apple will make “bigger changes” to the devices than in 2021 and 2022.
It’s hard to say if the biggest “Pro” model will also get the most upgrades now that it has a new name. This year, Apple made a bigger version of the iPhone 14 with a screen size of 6.7 inches. They called it the iPhone 14 Plus, but it didn’t have many extra features besides the size. On the other hand, the Apple Watch Ultra is very different from the regular Apple Watch Series 8 and is a lot more advanced.
Even though the new iPhones won’t be out for a year, there are already more rumors about them. Gurman thinks that the new models will have a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port. This is a change that makes sense since the EU requires it of all phone makers.

Another rumor comes from display analyst Ross Young, who says that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will have the same cutout as the iPhone 15 Pro (and Ultra?). Young also said that the regular iPhone 15 models probably won’t get the 120Hz display because the supply chain won’t be able to handle it.
Rumors about the iPhone 15 are still very new, so take everything above with a grain of salt. Some rumors never come true, and they often leave out important details. For example, none of the rumors about the iPhone 14 predicted that the most important new feature of the iPhone 14 Pro would be called “Dynamic Island.” As usual, we won’t know for sure until Apple actually releases the devices, which probably won’t happen until September 2023.
