Netflix has officially discontinued its $9.99 “Basic” subscription package for users in the United States and the United Kingdom. Cord Busters first observed the changes in the United States and the United Kingdom on Wednesday morning.
Netflix hinted to the loss of its lowest-priced ad-free tier last month when it deleted the “Basic” option for its Canadian users.
Users in the United States and the United Kingdom who are still subscribed to the $9.99 “Basic” plan may continue to do so as long as they do not change their subscription plan or deactivate their account. The plan gave customers all of the ad-free perks of a Netflix subscription, but the account only allowed them to stream on one device at a time.

New users will now have the option of paying $6.99 for the ad-supported plan or $15.49 for a Netflix “Standard” membership, which includes one additional device for simultaneous watching. Users can also share their account with one person who is not a member of the account holder’s household.
Netflix frequently tests new features and subscription modifications in select markets before introducing them more broadly. For example, months before Netflix tightened down on password sharing and began charging all customers to add individuals to their account who resided outside their family, the option was tried in countries such as Chile, Peru, and Costa Rica.
