The Asus Zenfone 9 is a fantastic gadget with some outstanding features at a fair price. It boasts a stunning design, an amazing display, a fantastic camera that provides the best video experience in its price range, and flagship-level specifications.
However, the battery life is inadequate, and the lack of 5G connectivity may be an issue for some. However, it is one of the greatest small smartphones available right now.
Asus Zenfone 9 Review and Specifications
Design
If it weren’t more petite than the bulk of Android phones on the market, the Asus Zenfone 9 would resemble a generic ‘chocolate-bar’ style smartphone. When compared to other mega-mobiles available for the same price, this makes it exceptionally easy to use with one hand.
The phone has USB-C connectivity as well as a 3.5mm headphone socket, which will delight wired music aficionados. There is a volume button and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner on the right edge, which works 9 times out of 10, which is better than some other phones. The massive rear camera array is a standout feature, with each of the two lenses sporting its own huge circular bump. Unlike many comparable-priced phones, the Zenfone has a plastic casing rather than a glass exterior. It does, however, have a textured grip that makes it easy to grab. It comes in four different colors; we tested the black one, but it also comes in red, blue, and white. The phone has an IP68 dust and water rating, so it should withstand a fall into water or dirt.
Display
The Asus Zenfone 9’s display measures 5.9 inches, making it one of the few Android phones produced in 2022 with a screen size of fewer than 6 inches. It has an FHD+ display, a maximum brightness of 1100nits, and a refresh rate of 120Hz, which is about what you’d expect for the price, but there are a few devices with a higher resolution at this price point.
The show was previously labeled as “fine,” and there are few better words to describe it. It has a resolution that matches most programs’ outputs and a refresh rate that makes motion appear smooth, but it accomplishes nothing better than other smartphones.
Camera
The two rear-facing cameras on the Asus Zenfone 9 cannot compete with those on many similarly priced smartphones. The Sony IMX766 sensor, which has low-light performance and works well, is used in the 50MP primary camera. The ultra-wide camera’s 12MP sensor has a 113-degree field of view. With moderate edge distortion, this lens performs similarly to the majority of shorter-focal-length lenses. Because there is no zoom camera, you must use digital zoom or cropping to go closer to a subject, despite the fact that many competitors at the same price point have them. When you zoom in too far, it rarely appears well and quickly results in fuzzy images.
The front-facing selfie camera is 12 megapixels and works effectively, producing photographs with adequate information and illumination. Even in low-light situations, it performs admirably, albeit Portrait mode can generate a lot of erroneous fake background blur. Many smartphones can record video at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. It also enables Pro Video mode, a capability that only a few devices have. This is similar to Pro Photo, but it allows you to change the shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and other video recording settings, giving you a lot of creative flexibility over the films you make.
Other modes include light trails, slow motion, panorama, and time-lapse, although none of them stand out.
Battery
Despite the fact that the Zenfone’s 4,300mAh battery is small in comparison to other smartphones, the small display makes this a non-issue. Despite this, the battery life of the Asus is decidedly average. In most instances, the phone’s battery life is sufficient for a full day of use and only degrades during intensive use. Charging takes 30W, which is a little slow for a premium phone, but neither Apple nor Samsung has embraced fast charging, so we can’t be too dissatisfied. That does, however, imply that this is an overnight-charging phone.
To prevent overcharging, Asus includes a number of battery health measures, including the ability to set the time when the phone should be fully charged each morning. This method assures that the phone will last longer before the battery runs out.
Price and Availability
The Asus Zenfone 9 8GB RAM/128GB variant costs £699 (roughly $840, AU$1,210) and the 16GB RAM/256GB model costs £749 (about $900, AU$1,300).
The Samsung Galaxy S22 starts at $799 / £769 / AU$1,249, while the iPhone 13 starts at $799 / £779 / AU$1,349. Asus is priced in the same general range as Samsung and Apple smartphones, making comparisons natural, despite the fact that it somewhat undercuts both. It is, however, substantially more expensive than the Google Pixel 6 ($599/£599/AU$999).
The phone was introduced at the end of July 2022, which was much later than the Zenfone 8’s debut in May 2021. We currently only have pricing information for the United Kingdom, however, the product is likely to be launched in other locations as well.
Software
You have a good, clean experience with Google’s built-in apps and the personalization capabilities of Android 12 because the Asus Zenfone 9 utilizes vanilla Android 12 without numerous Asus modifications. This is because Asus made a few modifications to it.

Verdict
The ZenFone 9 is an excellent gadget for folks who desire something that is simple to use and doesn’t take up too much room in their pocket. It has a lovely design, an excellent display with attractive colors and good levels of brightness, and an excellent camera with plenty of functions, and manual control choices if you want them (but if you don’t, this phone doesn’t need them).
However, its battery life falls short of expectations but should suffice for the majority of smartphone users. The current price range is expensive due to the lack of significant improvements since the debut of their previous generation of models, but they have managed to improve certain elements while keeping costs as low as possible!
