The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has dropped its years-long patent infringement lawsuit against Apple and Broadcom over Wi-Fi technology, about two months after the companies came to a potential settlement.
Caltech filed a notice in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California stating that it would dismiss its claims against Apple and Broadcom “with prejudice,” meaning the case cannot be refiled. Caltech also asked for Broadcom to do the same.
Earlier Lawsuit and $1.1 Billion Jury Award
In 2016, Caltech sued Apple and Broadcom for infringing on its Wi-Fi patents. A jury awarded Caltech over $1.1 billion in damages in 2020. However, a judge later overturned the award and ordered a new trial on damages. Additionally, you can also read about- Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon X Chips To Challenge Apple Silicon in Light Laptops
Settlement Discussions Lead to Lawsuit Dismissal
According to the court filing, Caltech and the companies have been in settlement talks, leading to the dismissal. Caltech also settled with Samsung earlier this year.
Other Ongoing Litigation
Caltech has also filed patent lawsuits against Microsoft, Dell, and HP over the same Wi-Fi technology. Those cases appear to be still ongoing. If you want you can also read- Samsung Backs Google’s Push for Apple to Adopt RCS Messaging
