Google Meet is introducing a useful new ‘On-the-Go’ mode aimed at optimizing the video conferencing experience for mobile users who are in motion. The feature streamlines controls and disables video when walking, riding, or driving.
When Google Meet detects a user is in motion on a mobile device, it will prompt them to activate On-the-Go mode. The mode turns on automatically after a brief countdown if the user does not respond.
Streamlined On-Screen Controls for Easier Access
On-the-Go mode surfaces intuitive oversized buttons on the bottom half of the screen for key controls like mute, audio source, hand raise, and end call.
Meeting details including number of participants and the current speaker are displayed at the top for easy viewing. The simplified interface allows mobile users to more easily access key controls while on the move.
Video Turned Off to Conserve Bandwidth
To conserve bandwidth and battery life, On-the-Go mode disables sending or receiving live video feeds. Users can continue participating in meetings via audio only.
However, users can still view shared presentations in full screen mode. Breakout room support is also maintained for collaboration on the go.
Automatic and Manual Options Available
On-the-Go mode will be triggered automatically when walking, riding, or driving is detected. But users can manually disable automatic suggestions in Meet’s settings.
The mode can also be turned on or off manually at any time through the “More controls” menu. This provides flexibility to choose when to optimize for mobility.
Rolling Out Now to All Google Meet Users
Google says the new On-the-Go mode will roll out widely over the coming weeks to all consumer and enterprise Google Meet users.
The feature will be available across the Gmail-integrated Meet experience as well as the standalone Meet mobile apps on both Android and iOS.
On-the-Go mode aims to provide an efficient mobile conferencing experience for users needing to join meetings while not stationary at a desk. The availability of this tailored interface underscores Google’s commitment to mobility.
