Imagine the light goes out during your favorite movie or a night before the storm. There is no need to panic! Prepare for the unexpected electricity outage by practicing the following tips:

Save Battery Life

The only appliance working during an electricity outage is your mobile phone or tablet, or laptop. Therefore, you may want to save power until necessary. Since we suggest you refrain from technology use, write down emergency contact on a piece of paper, a number of the nearest hospital, next of kin, library, or any public areas with electricity.

The feature to save energy on your mobile devices is to turn on the power-saving mode. These features consume comparatively less energy, so your phone can last for a longer time. You can also keep a power strip nearby in case you find a place with power.

Switch to a Gas Stove

Switch cooking on a gas stove immediately if you know the power won’t be coming back anytime soon. However, you will probably need a gas stove and a match for this plan to work. If in case you do not have a gas stove, cooking on a BBQ or a gas grill is another excellent alternative.

The food in your fridge will stay edible until four hours into the power outage. If the power has not returned until then, cook the perishables such as leaves and vegetables first. You can grill the meat with cheese slices too. Lower the burden on your fridge, so it stays operative for longer.

Learn How to Run a Generator

You will die in less than five minutes if you run a generator improperly from the immense carbon monoxide exit. At least 60 people die from this unfortunate cause, so best stay safe.

For the generator to work successfully, place its exhaust facing the door or windows. Run an outlet extension if you do not own a transfer switch. Read your generator manual to learn more about the installation.

If you do not own a generator, unplug all your devices such as the fridge, television, and microwave. Sometimes the uneven electricity supply can damage the appliances while the utility bidder is repairing the supply issue.

Check-In With your Social Circle

A prolonged power outage is a scary time, so check on your friends and family members. Knock at your neighbors and see if they need anything. Check on the elderlies in your area. Offer them to stay the night with you or until the situation improves.

If you have already prepared for the situation, carry your to-go bag for emergencies and visit a storm shelter. Always follow the guidelines provided by the local authorities and convey them to your friends and family as a responsible community member.

Final Advice

Stay safe! A power outage can cause anxiety and constant worriment wondering when the power will come back on. Therefore, we advise you to avoid being alone at this time. You can stay with a friend or a family member. You can even stay with your family if their electricity supply has not been halted.
