A class-action complaint has been filed against Apple, alleging that M1 MacBook models were sent with a hidden fault that caused their displays to fracture easily.

The case was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California on Tuesday, following a Migliaccio & Rathod study into easily damaged MacBook screens.

According to AppleInsider, the lawsuit accuses Apple of breaking various warranty, consumer protection, and deceptive advertising laws.

Users have experienced dead patches on their MacBook displays, according to the complaint. It also alleges that the screens on M1 MacBook models are prone to cracking.

“Many Class Laptop owners have stated that when they opened their devices from a closed position, they first noticed cracking and/or display issue. Others claim that their displays cracked when they altered the viewing angle of their screens in a normal way “According to the lawsuit,

“A reasonable consumer would not expect such activity to damage their device, let alone cause an obscured display and/or a screen crack that renders it useless,” it continued.

According to the newspaper, the complaint argues that Apple suppressed, failed to disclose, or used fraudulent marketing methods to conceal the issue.

It claims, for example, that Apple emphasised the notebooks’ durability while “actively” concealing the defect from consumers.

Early in 2021, reports of easily cracked screens among M1 MacBook owners began to surface.

Many consumers stated that screen cracks or damage appeared “out of nowhere.” The extent of the problem is unknown, however it has been reported on 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models.

According to the article, in at least one example, a customer was told by Apple specialists that the damage — “contact point fracture” — would not be covered by Apple’s standard warranty.
