Qualcomm has announced a new chip platform called Snapdragon X that aims to challenge Apple’s M-series processors in lightweight laptops. The Snapdragon X is based on technology from Nuvia, a startup founded by former Apple engineers that Qualcomm acquired in 2021.
Snapdragon X Directly Targets Apple M-Series Chips
The Snapdragon X platform seems positioned as a direct competitor to Apple’s M-series chips which debuted in the 2020 MacBook Air. If Snapdragon X can match the performance and battery life of Apple silicon, it could significantly shift the market for thin and light Windows laptops. These devices often involve tradeoffs between power and battery life, as seen in laptops like the Microsoft Surface Pro 9.
On-Device AI Processing with Dedicated NPU
Like Apple’s Neural Engine, the Snapdragon X platform will have a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for on-device AI. Qualcomm says this will enable new AI experiences on small devices for the “era of generative AI.”
Continued 5G Connectivity
Similar to past Snapdragon chipsets, the new X platform will feature integrated 5G connectivity. Apple has yet to add 5G to its M-series devices outside of iPads, as it has struggled developing its own modem technology.
