Samsung Galaxy S22 out of the way, our attention is moving to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldable, which are arriving in August — and it appears that the former gadget will receive a significant camera boost.
According to seasoned Samsung insider Dohyun Kim (via Notebookcheck.net(opens in new tab)), the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will include a 108MP main camera. That matches what we saw in the Galaxy S22 Ultra variant and is a significant improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s 12MP main camera sensor.
We heard reports earlier this week from another source that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 would also borrow the 10MP 3x optical zoom telephoto lens found on the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus, so we now have a better sense of the camera setup on the next foldable.
What we think we know so far
August approaches, and we’re hearing more and more about what the Galaxy Z Fold 4 might have in store for us. If Samsung gets this right, it might be the market’s top foldable for the foreseeable future.
In terms of selfie cameras, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is expected to retain the same in-display camera as its predecessor, the current Galaxy Z Fold 3. There have also been various reports that the price may fall this year.
Support for the S Pen is widely expected, and unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 may include a dock for the pen. Expect to learn more about the foldable phone as the launch date approaches in a few months.
Analysis: Foldable phones are catching up
There’s no denying that going foldable with a smartphone purchase means you’ll lose out in a variety of other areas. For starters, your bank balance will be significantly lower, but the foldable on the market right now don’t necessarily match up with the conventional flagships in certain areas, such as camera quality.
That’s understandable: getting a phone screen to fold is an extremely complex and difficult engineering process, and you’d expect other components to be reduced for technical reasons and to keep the overall device cost fair.
However, as this recent rumor indicates, foldable phones are rapidly catching up to the regular smartphone. If you want to buy a foldable Samsung phone instead of a non-folding one, you may soon just have to pay a tiny price increase.
Hopefully, as time goes on, more and more foldable solutions will become available to consumers. While the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is expected to receive significant advancements this time around, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is expected to receive more modest upgrades, which should result in a more appealing pricing point.
