Samsung Backs Google’s Push for Apple to Adopt RCS Messaging

Samsung has recently released a new video voicing support for Google’s #GetTheMessage campaign, which calls on Apple to adopt RCS (Rich Communication Services) for its messaging services. RCS is a cross-platform protocol that builds upon SMS with features commonly found in modern messaging apps like Apple’s iMessage.

The Samsung video titled “Green bubbles and blue bubbles want to be together” depicts a Romeo and Juliet-style conversation between two users separated by their messaging platforms. The bubbles reference how iMessage shows blue bubbles for chats between iPhone users, while Android users see green SMS bubbles with limited functionality. This disparity especially impacts countries like the US where iOS and Android users are split nearly 50/50. Apple’s Walled Garden vs. Push for Interoperability

Apple has incentives to maintain this walled garden as a form of ecosystem lock-in. However, regulators are investigating if iMessage should be considered a “core platform service” under the EU Digital Markets Act. If designated as such, Apple could be compelled to open iMessage to interoperability with other messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal.
