It may soon be possible for artists to feature NFTs on their Spotify pages. The streaming service confirmed to Music Ally that it is currently testing a new feature that enables artists to promote and sell their own NFTs within the app.
The feature is accessible to a select group of United States-based users. A member of this group can scroll past the songs section of the page and tap on an NFT to view a larger version of it. A “See More” icon will lead the user to the NFT marketplace OpenSea to purchase the item. Currently, Spotify does not take a cut of artists’ NFT sales.
The publication reported that Steve Aoki and The Wombats are among those currently displaying NFTs on their artist pages.
“Spotify is conducting a test in which it will assist a small number of artists in promoting their existing third-party NFT offerings through their artist profiles,” a Spotify representative told Music Ally.
“We routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to enhance the experiences of artists and fans. Some of these tests pave the way for a broader experience, while others only serve as an important learning opportunity.”
Spotify’s new feature follows in the footsteps of apps like Instagram and Twitter, which are utilizing NFTs to engage their user base in novel ways. Twitter began allowing premium users to use NFTs as profile photos in January, and Instagram is also experimenting with allowing users to display NFTs on their personal pages.
